The Sun Remembers Her

Upcoming events

The Sun Remembers Her spans 15 years of Stella Constantinou’s creative practice. Her paintings are accompanied by poetry, with image and language interacting throughout the exhibition to convey her personal narrative.

Here, Constantinou describes the exhibition in her own words:

For me, it is biography: the language of everything I have lived, felt, imagined and become.

There were years when chronic fatigue and pain pulled me into a deep darkness. The world around me became smaller. But somewhere within that darkness, I began to dream. Something was beginning to grow.

I think of that beginning as the acorn: small, almost invisible, but carrying the possibility of an entire tree. It became a symbol of recovery, transformation and becoming. Spring is the season of awakening—a reminder that even after the longest winter, something can push through the ground.

The bricks in my work represent the weight around me: the things we carry, the walls we build and what can feel impossible to move. But my work is also about what lies beyond those walls. The crows connect me to memory, observation and time, and to the world I discovered in Clitterhouse Park. The park became an important part of my recovery and my return to dreaming. In nature and in those quiet moments, my inner world began to open again.

From that time came my Astro collection—a journey through planets, stars, colour and memory, and the vastness of the universe both inside and outside of us.

What I create is the record of my becoming—brick by brick, dream by dream. The weight is there, and the darkness is there, but so is the spring. Like the acorn, I carry within me the possibility of everything I am still becoming.

Words for the Wall

Tied, But Not Trapped — The door was always there. We had the choice to leave.

Ego Cracks Like Brick — My ego cracked like brick, and wings of truth emerged.

Eardrum Rumble (not for sale) — The rumble. The voices. The chaos. The things that enter through the ear and stay somewhere inside.

Soul Breath — I breathe in. I hold the thought. I run. I leap. And for a moment, I believe myself upwards.

The Sun Remembers Her — The sun remembers her. The crows remember her. And now, she remembers herself.
