Sarah Lightman

Sarah Lightman is an award-winning artist and writer whose practice focuses on women, their struggles and their ageing bodies. She combines autobiography with feminist responses to Bible stories and art history.

In her paintings and drawings, she borrows Biblical women as depicted by the Old Masters and places them in her life – Bathsheba is overwhelmed with household chores, the Virgin Mary is beset with hot flushes and parenting worries, and Lot's wife is anticipating bladder weakness.

Lightman holds a BA and MFA from the Slade School of Fine Art and a PhD from the University of Glasgow. She is a faculty member at the Royal Drawing School and, in 2026, was awarded a Fellowship Grant from the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture

Lightman's solo exhibition will take place at the Highgate gallery in April 2027.
